AIPN Advocacy for injury prevention action in the new government [April 2008]
The Australian Injury Prevention Network was originally formed to be an “out of government voice” on issues to do with the prevention of injury. Lobbying and advocacy does not always come naturally to all members of the AIPN and we certainly need to learn to do it better. The good news is that we are making progress with a meeting with the Minister for Health’s adviser recently. We discussed in the meeting a range of the concerns we have about the inactivity around most of Australia on issues to do with the prevention of injury. To follow this up we were invited to put in writing our suggestions for a way forward for the new government.
Attached are copies of:
- the AIPN’s original letter to the Health Minister and a summary of the issues relating to injury prevention
- a discussion document sent at her request following our meeting with the Minister’s Deputy Chief of Staff. This document, ‘Health action on prevention of injury – a suggested starting point’ is a brief summary of suggested activities that we would like Health to undertake to restart action at the federal Health level on the important issue of injury prevention
We welcome any comments or discussion on other ways forward for bringing injury prevention back onto the agenda’s of all of the relevant agencies that have influence to make a difference.
