Dr Catherine Niven

General Member

Dr Catherine Niven is an injury prevention researcher at the Australian Centre for Health Services Innovation (QUT), working in the Product Safety Research Program and leading the SafeAge project. She has an honours degree in law and international business and completed her doctoral study on public health approaches to child product safety, which was awarded a 2020 QUT Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award. Catherine is an active member of the multi-agency Consumer Product Injury Research Advisory Group, which identifies injury issues and prevention strategies associated with unsafe consumer products.

She previously worked with the Queensland Government for over a decade in principal policy and legal roles, gaining a broad range of experience from managing significant policy and legislative projects, navigating Cabinet and Parliamentary processes, and coordinating legal services. Catherine has a wealth of knowledge in international product safety regulation, injury surveillance methodologies and policy translation. Her research interests lie in the improved identification of product safety risks to inform product safety design, standards, and regulatory responses.
